Feedback Request – ETD Maybe Making the Jump to Color in Chapter 9…
June 30th, 2009
Ambition, competition, and technology are pushing me to make this move, but first of all I want to know what all of you think about ETD maybe making the jump to full color. Included in this post is a sample image, a colored version of the current page. It’s not perfect and completely finished, but it’s a decent measure of my current level of coloring skill (still gotta work on those fine details and adapt to doing this sans-Wacom tablet).

I hope this doesn’t sound too snobby…
Maybe it’s just this page, but its feel is too ‘warm’. I would definitely change that color brown the walls are right now, or change Tail’s hair color. Right now, in most panels the only things to offset all that brown-red are tail’s ear-thingies, and that’s not really enough to make things balanced. Changing the ‘kill’ speech bubble back to white would help, because together with Jack’s white shirt it would create a big ‘cool’ spot more or less in the center of the page.

But color composition aside, the coloring is great.

Huh. Didn’t expect you to be online. Isn’t it real early in the morning everywhere in the US now?

Yup, it’s 7:43 atm. I’m sleeping all kinds of strange hours now. :S

The page looks good, the thing is it is a Shit load of work especially with a lot of the detail you put in. Not that ETD won’t work with color, but If you think you can swing the work and keep the comic schedule moderately consistent I say go for it. One suggestion I do have is that you may want to push back the schedule by at least a day for each upload so that you can focus on the coloring without having to rush it.

Hey I think it looks good, Seen a lot worse out ther. Like how the gratuitous panty shot is more obvious
. But I agree with Dumok lots of extra work, and I still like the comic in B&W

@dumok: Actually, coloring takes about as long as inking. So if I can skip the inking process and go straight to coloring soon as the pencils are scanned (which is a growing trend in the comics industry), production time will be about the same only with a more colorful product.

Of course saying that I’m glad you didn’t have colour in the previous story arc, I’m Assuming the Avatar and it’s god were pink, Some things are just a litle too ick

Welcome to the blog, Snowgods!
I dunno, I think it mighta been fun to color a huge Wangzilla. Pinks, blue, purples, reds, lol. XD Right now the goal is to eliminate the inking process and sub in the coloring process. Production time won’t take any sort of hit if I can make that jump.

Hi, I registered specifically for the feedback. I’ve been a long time fan, there since your first page and I can tell you that I’ve always loved your artwork because of its clean, sharp lines and attention to minute detail. I would love to explore how things look in color but I hope it’s not at the expense of those amazing details you always include. Perhaps it’ll even add more depth to the same details and then I would be all for it, no qualifications.

@aorellana: Welcome to the blog! Yeah, you outlined my primary concern about the transition to color. I’m sure there’s a way to include those fine details, but I’m lacking the knowledge and practice atm. Hopefully I can pick up on both after Chapter 8 wraps and I go on my usual month-long hiatus. I already have my study plan in the works. Oh, and now that you’re registered and if you’re up for it, feel free to drop some commentary on the next update (hopefully late tmrw)

I think that if you started to draw the comic in color it would look fine. I personally love your black and white style of drawing, either way I think your comic will always ROCK!!!

@elunogimp: Welcome to the blog!
One thing I wanted to pursue with full color was to move away from having ETD typecast as a webmanga. Certainly it has its influence in my work, but only mostly because it’s all in B&W. Full color actually diminishes that perception imo. But we’ll see. Oh and thanks for enjoying my webcomic.

I kinda wonder, what would happen if ETD was someday animated, cause in all honesty…THAT WOULD BE KICKASS! just a thought, what do other people think of that?
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:51 AM
I’d pay money to go see it… about 10 times!!! I’d sure as hell buy in series that was made. Buy the way, how’s the store coming Edgy?

Heh. This would take some getting used to. It looks great though.
You have my moral support.
(that last line sounds a hell of a lot better in swedish, by the way)

TBH i like both, but i really do love your b&w artwork where u put alot of detail into it e.g. the cock god. I suppose you could have say 75% of your comic b&w with coloured pages saved for pages you think its approipiate to have colour.
Plus if 1 art style is taking too long to finish then i would prefer the other as that would hopefully translate to more pages been realeased.
Eather style you choose ill still continue to read the comic as i think it has to be 1 of the best web comics out there, very professional, and im supprised that it isnt in the top 10 ranking at index sites, they dont know what their missing
July 4th, 2009 at 9:02 AM
There seems to be just about the same amount of detail in the colored page as there is in the other pages…if this is what you want to do, I’m all for it.
July 4th, 2009 at 4:38 PM
agreed.

Ive kind of been doing the same thing with my own pages except that I am drawing the pages straight on the computer…
