Suggestion for New ETD Site Thread
Anyone heading over from my old Comicgenesis site, please register and post suggestions or recommendations for the new website, apart from the empty links and the “Pimptalk” placeholder! ^^; Send me an email if you have any problems.
UPDATE: If you want an avatar for your comments, after you’re done with registration, head over to gravatar and upload a universal avatar. Follow all the instructions, wait a few minutes then reload the comments. All should be good.
UPDATE 2: Your initial comment will require approval, but afterwards, it looks like all posts after show up after you’re verified by my blog as a subscriber.
UPDATE 3: New subscribers registering comments for the first time here will see a slight delay in comment approval as I’m the sole admin around here and I’m attending a con in Boston, so I’ll have limited access to the net. I’ve toned down the background colors a bit, but any complaints about it can be directed to this thread, though it might take a while for direct responses. And special thanks to everyone who’s taken the effort to register on the new blog and set up their avatars.

Prestwick from the old site tagboard, checking in!
The polkadot background must have taken some doing but I think it works, especially with the anti-social and offbeat nature of the comic.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:13 AM
Thanks for post, Prestwick.
It looks I’ll be modifying the CSS parameters on the comment module. It’s pretty bare at the moment…
November 20th, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Haha, I was going to suggest that you turn on the registration for comments
Also, you may need to edit the links on your “blogroll” to include all the webcomics you like.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:47 AM
Already on the agenda. I might not get to a lot of stuff since I’m gonna be spending the later half of the day preparing for the convention.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:55 AM
Oh yeah! Have fun with that, was it a last minute thing?
November 20th, 2008 at 10:57 AM
Thanks! The con trip was already in the works for a while, but the scheduling was pretty last minute. I was also working on a portfolio which is still in the early stages.

MuteVampire from the old shoutbox checking in. I like shoutboxes more than blogs, myself (eventually I get bored of checking the blogs) but that’s up to you.
As for the polka dots, the current site burns my eyes a bit ;_; (note to self: sunlight is not as evil as you say it is)
There’s more, of course, but most of that falls in to “finish settling in, moving your links, etc. and THEN worry about suggesting things”
November 20th, 2008 at 12:18 PM
I’m a little divided on the shoutbox. Fond as I am of it, I want to encourage folks to use the blog. That and the Wordpress folk don’t encourage it as, according to them, it runs the risk of opening up the collective database with spam.
Yeah, I think I’ll tone down the background, much as I like graphically disturbing people. >:)
November 20th, 2008 at 12:31 PM
ok, how the hells do i set my avatar? ive gone through wordpress and found the forum, which had this thing called gravatar, so i signed up there too (ive now signed up for 3 things in one day -_-) and still i see blank-face there. Nothing against you edgy, but the avatar thing here is a P.I.T.A. no way to expedite this?
November 20th, 2008 at 12:36 PM
there we go, had to clear the cache. Still, had to sign up for 3 things to change avatar there -_-
For other’ convenience, skip searching. Your avatar is changed here: http://en.gravatar.com/
November 20th, 2008 at 12:42 PM
Yeah, it took me a while to figure that out too. On the bright side, if you do it now, according to the gravatar folks, you don’t have to ever bother with it again on other blogs. I probly should upgrade my pixely ass avatar post-convention…
November 20th, 2008 at 1:13 PM
a tip: you can stretch the gravatar cropper to encompass the entire image
November 20th, 2008 at 1:16 PM
Well, it won’t work methinks, cuz the original’s like 50×50px and is being blown up as it is and I’m too preoccupied with other stuff to put in something more adequate. Besides, I’d rather do something original, color it in, and upload. I should probly cut my hair and start packing for the con already.
November 20th, 2008 at 1:17 PM
right. Have fun! I’d see you there, but I work every day for the foreseeable future -_-
November 20th, 2008 at 3:16 PM
How about a forum. Is there a forum? I do not understand wordpress at all, and am way to lazy to read their instructions. Where do I change my avatar?
November 20th, 2008 at 3:17 PM
Also, how about not having comments wait to be moderated. Simply deleting the awful ones is way easier, isn’t it?
November 20th, 2008 at 3:18 PM
I’ll definitely be having my fun. I’m already scheduled for 3 cons next year so there’ll be plenty of opportunities for anyone interested to come see me and whatever work I have on hand.
November 20th, 2008 at 3:23 PM
@CGD: I’ll be adding a forum soon as I return from the con. Hopefully it’ll be used more than the last one! Sorry, but I have to approve all comments from users. Wordpress rules, BUT, it looks like as soon as the first comment is approved, you can post subsequent ones without waiting for approval since you’re recognized by me as a subscriber. It’s a better system than vigilantly swatting away spam ‘cuz once I know who and who not to trust around here, the both of us don’t really have to bother afterwards.
Once you’re all set up with registration, go to gravatar and upload a universal avatar. I know its a pain, but it only happens once, then you should be all set. And thanks for putting in the effort!
November 20th, 2008 at 3:34 PM
Well, a last time the forum wasn’t used because basically anything could be said in the shoutbox. If it’s not coming back, the forum will be used more often I think.
November 20th, 2008 at 3:41 PM
The forum wasn’t used all that much even before the shoutbox, but the use did spike a bit before it was introduced. I’ll most likely either nuke the old one or get a new one set up.
November 20th, 2008 at 4:36 PM
Hey, wow, etd has its own site now! Awesome stuff!
I could see the blog-comment part here being used for general discussion on current pages etc, but perhaps for bigger topics a forum could be used. The shoutbox was kinda annoying in the character limit on stuff, hence more in depth discussion right below the page of the day could be pretty good.
(also, testing avatar here..)
November 20th, 2008 at 4:41 PM
And you’ve been approved! You should be able to post without requiring further approval. GTG!!! Car waiting…
November 20th, 2008 at 5:20 PM
guess who this is?
November 20th, 2008 at 6:52 PM
Someone without a gravatar? j/k
Sup?
November 20th, 2008 at 8:00 PM
Beef from the old site reporting for duty sir!
November 20th, 2008 at 8:19 PM
At ease, sergeant! If I get access to a comp at the con, I’ll be sure to do a little liveblogging.
November 21st, 2008 at 8:35 AM
Hey Sam, I’m here. The website hurts my eyes, there’s far too much contrast to be able to read the comic in peace. I’d like to re-read all of it for the 5th time, but I always enjoyed doing so late at night, with a large cup of coffee and some chocolate cake. The orange won’t let me do that now.
November 21st, 2008 at 4:24 PM
Need wallpaper page… And wallpapers… Widescreens would be nice… Yes…
November 22nd, 2008 at 12:54 AM
Several things.
Having a clickable link at the top to go back to home is important.
I have graphical navigation code I could hook you up with
If you set a page named Archive there’s in the Templet area there is a click you can use that will automatically create an archive based on year and comic, pretty nifty.
http://www.fahlstad.se/wp-plugins/wp-forum/ wp-forum integrates with your user logins and can be just added to a page very easily
Permalinks should be turned on for proper SEO (settings -> Permalinks) use
/%cateogory%/%postname%/
maybe put in the css for #comic text-align: center; ? to center the image?
Otherwise, looks really nice edgy.

oh durr…. it’s because the background roughly matches the gradient in the title image. That’s why the color scheme is so important.
November 23rd, 2008 at 5:08 PM
Whoopee! Sam, you need to get one of these Netbooks. Great for blogging! Quick! Say your house burnt down and get a donation bar up!
November 23rd, 2008 at 8:34 PM
Hey everyone! Just came back from the con. Much to write about. Lots of new things are going to happen. Nothing earthshattering, but my production’s going to go in a new direction…
November 24th, 2008 at 5:48 AM
Oh you mean it’s going to see the light of day? ’cause that’s pretty earthshattering
November 24th, 2008 at 7:44 AM
Yup, new update on Wednesday and more goodies in the coming weeks.
November 30th, 2008 at 7:32 AM
Hey, the new background is a significant improvement, but it’s still just a bit too eye-straining while reading the actual comic. I’d suggest a more solid black border around the page, or toning the saturation on the background down even further. The border will probably work better.
Also consider a slightly thicker outline for the title image. I know it’s changing soon, but it really doesn’t stand out as much as I want it to, in my vision.
November 30th, 2008 at 9:08 AM
Well, the saturation is as low as it can be apart from going completely grayscale, but that’s been done before on the old comicgenesis site and I don’t really want to return to that. I could choose something with a bit more color to reduce glare. I’ll be doing something with the area around the comic, tho’ I’m not sure what exactly.
The title outline’s pretty thick as it is. I’ll need a few more complaints before I make any further edits. Apart from that, I’ll advise playing around with brightness on your screen settings for now.
